What Dr. Panchawagh has to say

The human Brain and Spine are two intricate and astonishing organs that nature has created. Surgery on these organs needs extreme care, focus and concentration to get good results.

As a neurosurgeon, while operating on these organs, I not only get a feeling of enormous responsibility but also that of gratitude. That Nature, while creating these very delicate organs has also ensured that Man has the capability to evolve the development of such cutting-edge technology that there is a possibility to treat some of these diseases with high precision.

In my neurosurgical clinic, I see patients who have brain tumours, severe pain like trigeminal neuralgia, life-changing diseases like hemifacial spasms, severe brain injury, catastrophic brain haemorrhage, stroke, spinal cord trauma etc.

Some spinal problems that I treat quite frequently are debilitating back pain, neck pain, sciatica, neurogenic claudication, spinal tumours, spondylosis, spondylolisthesis, etc.

Lifestyle diseases like backache and headache due to overuse of computers, and a sedentary, stressful life have contributed to young patients with no organic problems seeking help.

I also marvel at the entire gamut of roles I am required to play: Fighting to save a life in the Emergency Room; trying to preserve important brain functions by operating for long hours under the neuromicroscope in the Operation Theatre; counselling a mother or a daughter or a son, whose relative has terminal brain disease; presenting our team’s work on brain tumours or trigeminal neuralgia or endoscopic spinal surgery in a scientific conference or meeting; teaching trainee doctors and nurses; meeting with fellow colleagues over a cup of coffee; spending time with my family and friends; making time to follow my hobbies….the list sounds exhausting, but makes me feel alive and well-balanced.

Life’s journey takes me through science, philosophy, art, spirituality, process of introspection…..And that's why it is a humbling experience.

To my mind, art and science form a continuum. They are not mutually exclusive. Treating brain or spine problems calls for the abilities and skills of a sympathetic but logical mind.

While reflecting on why my extra-curricular passions spur me on, I have found that the meditative state I experience while scuba diving , the sheer wonder and awe I experiences while trekking in the Himalayas or the deep empathy I feel while listening to the melodious sound of strings of the Sitar......they all share an intimate connection with the art and science of neurosurgery. These activities help me to unwind, concentrate and help me in my efforts to do justice to this quest called Neurosurgery.

In this website you will be able to know me better by being able to have a peek into my life as a neurosurgeon and also about my other life-interests which include Scuba-diving, trekking and playing the well-known Indian string instrument called the Sitar.
